The Cardinals entered the season with a thin backfield. The injury-prone Andre Ellington was slated as the starting running back while David Johnson was expected to see quality time as well. As it played out, the Cardinals signed former 2,000 yard rusher Chris Johnson, just weeks before the season kicked off.
After a failed stint with the Jets in 2014, CJ2K waited around in free agency like that kid you pick last in a game of pickup football. He has made other teams pay. Johnson has revived previous form and has looked like the back he was during his days in Tennessee, although not as explosive. The Cardinals got a steal as Johnson has been extremely productive in the backfield while sticking as a top 5 rusher this season.
In Sunday’s narrow win over the 49ers, Chris Johnson suffered a leg injury and was placed on short-term IR – making him eligible to return for the Super Bowl, if the Cardinals advance that far. Andre Ellington took over for Johnson but would proceed to leave the game with a foot injury. He is set to miss this week’s game as well, but you will want to monitor updates beyond this week.
With Johnson and Ellington both out this week, David Johnson emerged as the top waiver wire target of week 13. The rookie out of Northern Iowa has displayed signs of flashes this season. In limited time this season, he has 8 total touchdowns which includes a 108 yard kick return.
Johnson has a great combination of size, speed and hands. He is a tremendous receiver out of the backfield with nearly 250 yards and 3 TDs to his credit. He has great burst which makes him a big play threat. Johnson carries great upside with both Johnson and Ellington out, he is a must start in week 13 and possibly beyond depending on Ellington’s health in further weeks.
