The New York Giants will open up the 2014 season at the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. The Giants finished the preseason 5-0 but the first teams on both sides of the ball played pretty bad. After starting the 2013 season 0-6 it’ll be interesting to see how the Giants come back to start 2014.
The Lions are stacked on offense with QB Matthew Stafford having all sorts of weapons at his disposal like Calvin Johnson, Golden Tate, Reggie Bush and Joique Bell – not to mention stud rookie tight end, Eric Ebron. You can be rest assured that the Lions will try to go deep and go deep often. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Giants get burned and burned often on defense. Their only way of slowing the Lions down is if guys like Pierre-Paul and Kiwanuka can get pressure on Stafford. If not, this game will be a track meet and get ugly real quick.
The Giants have a new offense and are looking to get the ball out of Eli Manning’s hand quickly with the hopes of being more accurate and efficient. Their running game will be a mix of Rashad Jennings, Peyton Hillis and Andre Williams. Nothing real scary there but Jennings will finally have his shot to be the feature back with the bulk of the carries. It’ll be interesting to see if he can handle that role.
What’s missing for the Giants is a TE threat. The Giants have not had a legitimate TE since Martellus Bennett left. The TE is a position of comfort for Eli Manning and without it Eli has struggled and this new offense is very dependent on production from the TE position. So, we’ll see what the Giants can come up with.
Im not really expecting much from the Giants in this game. I think Detroit will have their way on offense and have an easy first win of the season 41 – 17. Be prepared for a long season, Giants fans.
