The Carolina Panthers are reportedly “confident” that they will have starting quarterback Cam Newton ready for week one when they take on the division rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Newton is currently battling a rib injury that some thought could potentially prevent him from taking on the Bucs. That doesn’t appear to be likely, however, as Carolina previously had “no doubt” that Newton would play, and there is still about a week to go before he’ll even have to take the field.

While it looks like an almost certainty that Newton will take the field in week one, Derek Anderson would likely draw the start if Newton did in fact have to sit out.

Fantasy Spin

Newton is playing and he should be a quality option in fantasy football leagues to start the season. The Buccaneers surely aren’t a trash defense and have good coaching, but they no longer have Darrelle Revis and Newton is pretty unpredictable. I will be interesting to see how Newton does with a slew of new passing game weapons against a solid defense, but all signs point to him being a 100% go and a solid fantasy option this Sunday.
