With Josh McCown still showing “minor” symptoms from his week one concussion, the Cleveland Browns have officially ruled him out for their week two tilt with the Tennessee Titans. With McCown hitting the bench, that puts second-year quarterback Johnny Manziel front and center as the starter in week two.
Manziel was inconsistent in relief of McCown last week, as he threw a quick touchdown and helped the Browns to 10 points in the first half, but went on to turn the ball over three times in a 31-10 loss to the Jets in New York. A lot was working against Manziel and he definitely didn’t play up to his potential, but there also was a decent amount of good to take away. One thing is for sure, he’ll have to do a much better job when it comes to avoiding pressure and taking care of the football in week two. The Titans aren’t known as an elite defense, but they did harass Jameis Winston in week one and forced him into two interceptions.
We already fully broke this down when we projected Johnny Manziel as a week two sleeper earlier in the week, but here’s a refresher: Manziel doesn’t have any weapons, but he has some upside to his game and is playing at home. For what it’s worth, he has made serious strides in terms of knowing the playbook, understanding protections and leading a team. He isn’t all the way there yet, but Tennessee could potentially give him a chance at a solid day in front of his home crowd. From there, who knows where the Johnny Football hype takes us.
For now, you probably don’t want to take the dive with Manziel in season long fantasy football leagues. While I think he could be in for a solid outing, he doesn’t have much help and we saw last week that he needs work when it comes to protecting the football. He’s absolutely worth a roll of the dice in daily fantasy football leagues, though, where your season record isn’t tracked and he’s just $5.2k (at DraftKings).
