In New England’s overtime loss this past week to the Denver Broncos, Rob Gronkowski was carted off the field with a bone bruise/right knee sprain. Initially it looked like a long-term injury, but luckily it is only minor. Still, it will sideline Gronk for this week’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles as he is listed week-to-week.
The injury bug has bit New England hard this year. Gronkowski is added to a long list of injuries that already includes season-ending injuries to other offensive weapons such as Dion Lewis and Julian Edelman.
With Gronkowski’s injury, Scott Chandler became one of the hottest waiver wire pickups of the week. Chandler is a proven receiving threat after compiling over 2,100 receiving yards and 17 TDs from 2011-2014 with the Buffalo Bills.
When Gronkowski was forced to leave, Chandler emerged as Brady’s favorite target as he hauled in 5 catches for 58 yards and a TD. You know how Brady loves his tight ends, and Chandler should do a fine job of succeeding Gronk, for now. I would definitely start him this week against a poor Eagles defense.
The injury to Gronk also affects guys like Danny Amenola and Brandon LaFell. The WRs for New England should receive more targets, one of whom I expect to have a big day – depending on who Brady favors. Amendola should be good to go this week as e practiced Tuesday.
The backfield remains a hit or miss this week. You never know if James White or Brandon Bolden are going to produce, start in your FLEX with caution.
