Philadelphia Eagles star running back DeMarco Murray was limited all week with a hamstring injury but was fully expected to play against the New York Jets in week three. In fact, there had been recent reports that the Eagles would not “hold him back”. That isn’t the case ultimately, as Philly’s top running back is officially inactive for week three.
It’s been tough sledding for last year’s league-leading rusher, as Murray has just 11 yards on 21 carries to start his Eagles tenure. It looks like Philly will give him the week off to get both physically and mentally ready for the rest of the year. Ryan Mathews steps in as the Eagles’ early down back and will be rotated in and out with scat-back, Darren Sproles.
We were already suggesting Murray as a sit this week due to his poor play and this awful matchup, so him sitting isn’t a big deal. It’s a huge deal if you badly needed running back help, though, while both Mathews and Sproles become hot plays in daily fantasy football leagues. Sproles might be the slightly more interesting play, as he should be quite active as a receiver out of the backfield. Mathews is a quality rusher, but finding a lot of success against the Jets isn’t overly likely. Whatever you do, just make sure Murray is out of your lineups.
