Antonio Gates had been a total monster since returning from his four-game suspension to start the 2015 NFL season. In his first two games back, he racked up 18 total catches, nearly 200 receiving yards and two scores. Unfortunately, his hot run could be haulted as his San Diego Chargers prepare for the Oakland Raiders in week seven.
Per reports, there is growing concern surrounding a knee injury Gates suffered late in last week’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. Head coach Mike McCoy didn’t seem too worried earlier in the week, even suggesting that Gates was the type of player that could miss the entire week of practice and still suit up. That may not be the case come Sunday.
Gates is dealing with a knee sprain and even admitted it’s a situation he’s not “accustomed” to dealing with. That reality could have the Chargers with a limited or possibly even absent Gates come week seven. Should Gates be at less than 100% or sit out, backup tight end Ladarius Green would be in for a big role.
Gates has been killer in fantasy football and that was the expectation again going into week seven, as he draws the Raiders, who are league worst in defending his position. Fantasy owners giddy with excitement over using Gates may want to slow their role, however, as it looks like he is at serious risk of sitting out or playing at far less than full strength. If either is the case, Green is going to be a huge addition off the waiver wire. Just as importantly, he could end up being the value play of the week at DraftKings, where he’s just $2.9k at the tight end position.
