Arizona Cardinals running back Andre Ellington had an unfortunate day in the week 1 matchup against the Saints, leaving the game injured in the fourth quarter. He went down after making a cut and ended up suffering a knee sprain.
Because of Ellington’s injury, Chris Johnson, former CJ2K, was Arizona’s primary running back in weeks 2 to 4. He played surprisingly well, helping a powerful offense that’s averaging ridiculous 37 points/game. On Thursday (10/8), he’s had the first full practice after the injury and is expected to play next sunday against the Detroit Lions.
Coming back from injury, Ellington should have less carries than Chris Johnson, at least in this matchup against the Lions. So you shouldn’t count on the 5-9 back to have a great fantasy day.
The biggest fantasy impact is on Chris Johnson, who was very productive for his fantasy owners throughout weeks 2-4. When Ellington was out, Bruce Arians featured CJ2K, giving the former star 68 carries. Now with all their backs healthy, the Cardinals should return to their running-back-by-committee approach, so there’s less value in starting either Arizona back, especially considering that Bruce Arians loves to throw, having passed the ball around 59% of the time in the 2014-15 and 2013-14 seasons. Also, even though the Lions are the only winless team in the NFL and looked awful in their 4 games so far, they have been pretty average against fantasy running backs.
