A season-ending knee injury to Carolina Panthers #1 wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin opened the door to raw rookie Devin Funchess taking over a huge role as Cam Newton’s top target. The door is indeed open, but Funchess hasn’t walked through yet.
Per Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, Funchess hasn’t yet earned that number one role and is not yet an official starter. The starting jobs currently belong to veterans Ted Ginn Jr. and Jerricho Cotchery, with Funchess assuming #3 wide receiver duties.
Rivera says starting WRs are Corey Brown and Ginn, with Funchess pushing them.

Whether this means you can give Funchess a try in week one DFS fantasy football leagues or not remains to be determined. Funchess is still on a team that badly needs his size and athleticism, while his price remains good over at DraftKings. Of course, Ginn and Cotchery are just as cheap, if not cheaper, and may have better roles to get 2015 going.
Overall, this is simply a situation to avoid until there is more clarity. Ginn and Cotchery have never been consistent performers as top options, and they’re probably even risker than taking a stab at Funchess. The best thing is to just avoid this situation for now. That being said, Funchess is still a high upside flier to be taken late in season long fantasy drafts.
