Kendall Hunter‘s knee gave out on him during the San Francisco 49ers’ Friday practice. Saturday morning, the team found out the fourth-year running back had sustained a torn ACL, likely ending his season.
Hunter was set to be the primary backup to an aging Frank Gore. Gore’s production declined last season, as he appeared to be starting to age. With Hunter unavailable, rookie Ohio State product Carlos Hyde should take over as Gore’s sole backup. Hyde is a big bruising back that could be a nice change of pace to Gore. Hyde’s work in the passing game will need a lot of work if he hopes to be anything more than that, however. Hyde should be a solid handcuff for Gore in fantasy leagues, but unless Gore goes down with an injury, he’s still the top dog in San Francisco.
