The Carolina Panthers’ backfield has been a wasteland as far as fantasy football goes ever since Cam Newton joined the party in 2011, and now it’s looking even more wasteland-y. DeAngelo Williams, who missed Weeks 2 and 3, left Week 4’s loss to Baltimore early and is now officially out for Week 5 with a right ankle injury.

Williams joins fellow backs Jonathan Stewart (knee) and Mike Tolbert (leg, fat) on the Panthers’ injury report, which leaves them prettay, prettay depleted. Head coach Ron Rivera is reportedly hopeful that Stewart will be able to go after sitting out last week, but that’s still very much in doubt.

Carolina’s running backs as of today are Darrin Reaves, Fozzy Whittaker and Chris Ogbonnaya, who was just signed this week. There’s still a chance the team could look to add another free agent, but for now, that’s what they’ve got to roll with. Poor, poor Cam Newton.

If you’re incredibly desperate to add a RB in fantasy, I guess you could try and roll the dice with one of these fellers. Ogbonnaya may be your best bet, since he’s shown flashes at a couple of other stops around the league, but the Panthers aren’t exactly exceptional when it comes to punishing teams via the ground game. Reaves took the majority of the carries after Williams went down last week, but gained just 26 yards on his 12 totes.

They have a favorable matchup this week with a Bears defense that has struggled to stop the run, but you’re asking a lot if you really think any of these spares will do much for you.
