Week one of the 2018 NFL preseason arrives on Friday night, which means the countdown begins for the start of the 2018 fantasy football season. The next month will have me sifting through my fantasy player rankings to iron out the wrinkles and hammer home precisely how I think things will shake out this year.

I think the story is obvious up top. To me, nobody offers more upside than David Johnson.

Everyone seems to forget he was the top dog amongst running backs in 2016, only to see a random wrist injury derail his 2017 run before it ever really got going. Johnson is in for a massive role and he’s about as explosive and as versatile as running backs get today.

Todd Gurley, Le’Veon Bell and even Ezekiel Elliott are all right there with him, but I’ll be taking DJ with the #1 overall pick and will cross my fingers he slides to me in leagues where I’m picking 2nd or later.

The beauty of this year is not the top portion of the running back position, though. There are several breakout candidates as well as some rookies we need to properly value. It still seems like guys like Christian McCaffrey, Jerick McKinnon and even Jay Ajayi aren’t being accurately graded just because people are a little scared they could bust.

I’m down for taking a chance on all three, so long as I can shore up a nice stable of backs later in my draft.

I also have an eye on the top rookie options, but I won’t be reaching in round one to see if Saquon Barkley can crush skulls in year one. Derrius Guice, Royce Freeman and Ronald Jones are much more on my radar.

One other thing I’m struggling with is the infatuation with Ty Montgomery and Jamaal Williams in Green Bay. Aaron Jones is consistently being taken behind both of these guys, yet the only real reason for that seems to be a two-game suspension.

That’s fine by me, as I’ll snatch Jones up and ride him out for the remainder of the year. He’s the most talented back the Packers have after all.

There are other guys to avoid and chase down. For everyone else, hit up my fantasy football running back rankings and comments. Just keep in mind it’s the first week of August and these rankings are sure to change a bit over the course of the month.

Hopefully I can help you during your fantasy draft process via my rankings and insight. Either way, good luck and happy prepping!
