Don’t look now, but the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft might include three quarterback prospects. With numerous teams needing an answer under center going into the 2015 NFL season, Baylor product Bryce Petty could be seeing his stock rapidly rising, per reports. Per Charles Robinson via Twitter, the New Orleans Saints could be thinking about the future with their 31st overall pick. Drew Brees has displayed mild signs of regression in recent years and even though the team has stated publicly they’re not drafting to replace Brees anytime soon, they clearly are thinking about what lies ahead in possibly just 2-3 years.
They’re not the only team that may have their eyes on Petty, either. Per Robinson, the Buffalo Bills are also interested and could find a way to trade into the first round. Buffalo did just that just a few years ago to get E.J. Manuel, but it looks like their new regime is intent on heading in a different direction, and possibly with Petty.
Petty has received mixed reviews as an NFL prospect due to his system and a down senior season. However, Petty is a plus athlete who has shown to be mobile in and out of the pocket and also has visibly improved as a down field passer. Petty would have a learning curve due to the system he was in at Baylor, but considering that’s the case with a lot of college passers (Marcus Mariota, anyone?) that shouldn’t deter any team from taking him if they believe he has the talent to turn into a viable starter.
At the moment, at least two teams do appear to think that. Whether or not it’s the Saints, the Bills or someone else entirely that swoops in late in round one to make Petty the third quarterback taken in round one, of course, remains to be determined.
