The New York Giants have some serious needs to address. The main concerns are offensive line, linebacker, defensive pass rusher, safety (now that Stevie Brown has signed with Houston) and running back. I also put those positions in, what I think, is order of importance. So what might the Giants do with the #9 overall pick?

The Giants have not been so predictable in recent drafts. I would never have guessed Odell Beckham Jr. as their first round selection last year. So although we think we know what the Giants need that doesn’t necessarily mean that’s what they’re going to do. They have had the reputation of “best player available” for a while now. However, I would expect the Giants to address two of these needs I mentioned in the first three rounds.

Here is my best guess-timation of how the Giants’ first three rounds will go.

ROUND 1 ( 9th OVERALL) –

Let the guessing game begin! If you have looked at multiple mock drafts online you have probably seen a different name listed for the Giants’ pick in all of them. The Giants have many important needs to address as I mentioned above. So what position and who is most likely? My guess is that the Giants take an offensive lineman here. I have to think they understand the pressing need to get better and younger at that position to protect Eli Manning. The two names that I’m hearing the most are Brandon Scherff (Iowa) and Ereck Flowers (Miami). I like Flowers better but I think they take Scherff.

On a wild-card note…..If Todd Gurley (RB Georgia) is still available at this pick don’t be surprised if the Giants take him.

SELECTION – Brandon Scherff, OL, IOWA

ROUND 2 (PICK 8, 40th OVERALL) –

Now that S Stevie Brown has signed with the Texans and Antrel Rolle has signed with Chicago, Safety becomes an immediate need. Nat Berhe and Quintin Demps are the options as of now and Demps isn’t even signed. This draft seems to have some very good value at the Safety position. As much as the Giants NEED a pass rusher I think the safety situation moves into the next priority. If, and this is a BIG IF, Landon Collins falls, I don’t think the Giants can fill out the selection card fast enough.

SELECTION – Landon Collins, S, Alabama

ROUND 3 (PICK 10, 74th OVERALL)

I am well aware of the pass rush need on the defensive line but linebacker has been avoided for too long. If the Giants fail to address this position in yet another draft it’s going to catch up with them this season. In years past, the Giants have filled the linebacker position, check that, PATCHED is the better term, quite nicely. But you can’t do that forever. I doubt the Giants willa ctually take a LB here but I am hoping they do so.

SELECTION – Jordan Hicks, LB, Texas

*if the Giants go DL with a pass rusher I’d throw out the name Trey Flowers, DE, Arkansas.

In actuality, I hope the Giants trade out of the 9th pick and get a few more picks in this draft. This years’ prospects are heavy in the Giants’ areas of team needs. Loading up on picks and prospects would be fortuitous to say the least for the G-MEN this year.
